Fourth of July in KC

Thursday, June 30
  • There is no better place to enjoy a KC summer concert than at Crossroads KC.  Situated behind delicious, local pizza restaurant, Grinders, this outdoor music venue allows patrons to enjoy music under the beautiful night sky in the heart of Kansas City’s artsy and vibrant crossroads district. View location here. On this particular Thursday, the legend, Elvis Costello will play with his band,  Elvis Costello and the Impostors.

Friday, July 1st
  • Crown Center features free movies every Friday night as part of their “Free Friday Night Flicks”. This Friday, they kick off the summer series with the movie, “50 First Dates”. Grab a lawn chair, a picnic basket and saddle up on the Crown Center lawn to enjoy this fabulous free tradition that is a staple of a Kansas City Summer. The movie starts at 9pm.   • The Kansas City Crossroads Arts District opens its gallery doors wide to the public the first Friday of every month for its annual First Friday event. The neighborhood becomes even more vibrant, alive and buzzing on a First Friday than any other night of the month. This is a great way to experience all the sights, sounds and tastes the Crossroads has to offer. Here are some highlights for this Friday:
    • The Gallery at 19 Below (5 West 19th Street, 816-471-1019). Graphic designers Robb Smigielski and Jamie Gray present Dead Modern , a modernist exhibition and poster sale.
    • The Keyhole:  Jessica Logsdon and her Crossroads gallery team have artists face off against one another as they create images of live models posed and dressed as famous, larger than life figures. On July1st, Marc Saviano assumes the role of Uncle Sam to be painted by Victoria Strong, Mary Ware, Christina Gandy, Cortney Jarisch, Jason Sierra and Logsdon herself. See it happen from 5:30 to 10 p.m.
    • Make sure you stop by Good Ju Ju. Voted as Kansas City’s #1 Resale Shop by the Pitch Magazine in 2010,  this is a once-a-month antiques and collectibles shopping venue that features more than 20 different antique dealers. Good Ju Ju will be open 9 am to 9 pm on this particular July 1st First Friday.
Saturday, July 2nd
  • Enjoy fireworks and flowers among the beauty of Powell Gardens at the  Booms and Blooms Festival. Bring your picnic, enjoy the day lily display in the perennial garden and peruse the n ew Heartland Harvest Garden. The Lee’s Summit Symphony Orchestra will play just before the fireworks display at dusk. The festival starts in the afternoon. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and children 5-12 are free!
  • Since 2005, the KC Riverfest ha s been a source of great family fun over the Independence Day weekend, and this year will hopefully be no exception. The fest will kick off on Saturday with three stages of music, children activities and a fireworks display at night. The festival continues onto Sunday July 3rd with even more fun. Tickets are $10 at the gate, admission is free for the first two hours. The festival will last from around 1pm to around 10 pm on both days.
Sunday, July 3rd
  • Kansas City may be far away from Wimbledon, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the match in style. Watch the Wimbledon match this Sunday July 3rd on Avenues Bistro’s flat screen and enjoy our top-notch brunch. Champagne, strawberries and a full, delicious brunch that lasts up until the match is over. All this for the price of $24.95. Tickets are limited and this event is only happening at Avenues Leawood call (913) 381-5678 to reserve your ticket.
  • Last night for Heart of America Shakespeare Festival. If you haven’t seen this attended yet, make sure you catch the last night of this summer’s performance, Shakespe are’s Macbeth. The performance takes place in an outdoor theater, adjacent to the Nelson Atkins Art Gallery, on the outskirts of the Country Club Plaza., and begins at 8pm. Just like every year, this play is completely free, however, one can donate $10 to the festival by texting “SHAKES” to 5200.
Monday, July 4th
